Benefits of Keeping a Journal: Part I

Updated: Jul 4

Hi everyone, welcome back!

Today, just like the title of this post, I'd like to talk about the benefits of journaling.

I was always interested in journaling, which made me start a journal or a planner at the beginning of every new year, but I always failed to finish it throughout the year.

When I got into college years, that's when I really started utilizing a journal and a planner to keep track of my schedule and feelings of the day. As I continued to do that for myself, I realized there are many benefits to keeping a journal or a planner, so I wanted to share the positive effects of journaling with you guys.

Journaling always has been popular, but I think it got much more popular when COVID-19 hit, which made all the people stay home for safety. The longer the quarantine got, people were looking for things they could enjoy and spend time on at home. Journaling really helped me through the quarantine, as it made my boring and unable quarantine life delightful. So, let me introduce the benefits of writing one, and take a moment to reflect on why this habit is valuable.

Here are the primary benefits that come to my mind:

Enhances Self-Awareness: Regular journaling encourages self-reflection, allowing you to explore into your thoughts and experiences. This process encourages increased self-awareness, making the way for personal growth and development.

Helps you think more clearly: Journaling helps organize your thoughts and clarify ideas. By writing down your thoughts and feelings, you can gain a clearer perspective on various situations, challenges, and goals. This mental clarity enhances decision-making and problem-solving skills.

Boosts Creativity: Engaging in creative writing exercises within a journal can ignite the imagination and encourage creativity. Whether it's through storytelling, poetry, or free-flowing thoughts, journaling provides a space for creative expression and exploration.

Brings Peace of Mind: Writing a journal provides a way to express and process your emotions, resulting in a sense of calm and relaxation. Research indicates that regular journaling can reduce mental distress. For instance, individuals dealing with medical illnesses and anxiety reported greater well-being and fewer depressive symptoms after journaling for 15 minutes three days a week over 12 weeks, and the study showed that journaling has consistently improved their mental health.

As I have shared the benefits of journaling with you guys, let's now take the first step together and begin a journal together for ourselves!

First, make it a habit.

Pick a time that fits well for you throughout the day, whether it's in the morning when you wake up, or at night before you go to sleep. Find the best time for you to start journaling. I personally like a time towards the end of the day, so I can take a look back at my day, and think over my feelings and thoughts of the day.

Secondly, listen to yourself and do what feels most comfortable to you.

There's no need to follow strict guidelines when it comes to journaling.

It's your personal space to express yourself freely. Don't stress about needing to fill up the page. Just start jotting down your thoughts and feelings about your day. It can be a word or two, a sentence, or a paragraph. Focus on yourself, and do whatever feels most comfortable to you.

Lastly, express your creativity and imagination.

You might feel uncertain about where to start with journaling, especially if you're not familiar with it. However, journaling isn't limited to just writing words. Explore different styles of journaling such as making to-do lists, drawing, sketching, scrapbooking, and bullet journaling.
