Style of Journaling: Bullet Journal vs. Dakku

Hello everyone, welcome back to Marshmallow Station!

I hope you guys have been well, and your week has been great!

In our previous posts, we explored the benefits of journaling and recommended some of our journal-friendly products to encourage y'all to start one. Today, we want to introduce you guys to the world of Korean-style journaling, known as Dakku, and compare it with Bullet Journal. I hope this blog post will brighten your day and perhaps inspire you to try something new in your creative routine!

Major Difference

Dakku is a Korean-style journaling method, mainly focused on decorating and personalizing the page of your diary or planner using stickers, washi tapes, memo pads, drawings, and embellishments before you start writing your journal of the day. The main goal of Dakku is to create a journal page that best matches your story of the day using pre-made decorative supplies by great artists. Dakku is less time consuming and requires less personal creative ability compared to Bullet Journal, meaning it's an easier way to try creative journaling for beginners and those who think they are lacking creativity.

Bullet Journal is a type of journaling method created by Ryder Carroll, a simple way to help you stay organized on your daily schedules, reminders, and to-do lists by using simple symbols like "bullet points," in a single notebook. Bullet Journal used to be the most simple and effective way to be organized using a notebook and a pen, but it has evolved over time to be one of the creative ways to build your own journal or planner. The main goal of Bullet Journal nowadays is to design your own journal pages on a blank or grid notebook only using writing supplies such as colorful pens, markers, and colored pencils to decorate the pages. As the Bullet Journaling tools are as simple as a notebook and a pen, it does require creativity and may be time consuming sometimes depending on the design you choose to create.

Tools and Supplies

For Dakku, you'll need plenty of decorative supplies like cute stickers, washi tapes, memo pads, stamps, colorful pens, and a notebook or a planner. The more the better. Dakku is all about building a page that best describes what you are planning on writing down on that page. If you've been into drinking teas lately, why don't you decorate your weekly page with tea themed stickers to show what your interest has been that week? If you are already a stationery lover, you won't even need to buy all these supplies, because you'll already have plenty of collections of your own!

For Bullet Journal, all you will need is a notebook and a pen to get started if you are aiming to only focus on functionality and simplicity. Some other additional tools can be a ruler, colorful pens or markers, and stencils. As Bullet Journal requires minimal tools and supplies, it heavily depends on using your own creativity to fill up the pages. However, the way you manage your Bullet Journal is up to you. You can also add some cute stickers or washi tapes to decorate your page and make it your own style.

Design and Structure

Dakku is all about decorating and creating aesthetic journal pages using pre-made decorative products such as stickers, washi tapes, memo pads, or small art goods of great artists. Dakku is like a mixture of journaling and scrapbooking, where you can include diary entries, photos, your own artwork, and any memorable goods such as movie tickets along with decoratives. When starting a Dakku, choosing a theme to focus on is the best way to start decorating the page. Begin with a main idea and add other decoratives that get along well. Balance is important in the processdo not crowd your journal too much!

Bullet Journal can be as simple or as fancy as you would like. Some people prefer a minimalist look with just a pen and a notebook, while others like to express their creativity by adding charts, to-do lists, and doodles to their pages. When starting a Bullet Journal, many people like to design their pages in monthly themes, but you can do it daily as well if you'd like. Most of the time, Bullet Journal has a consistent format to keep things clear and organized, which is a great way to keep track of schedules, tasks, and goals.
